Another Play Promotion Is A Wrap

I volunteered my design skills for another S.K.I.T. Theatre play that my daughter is in. I can't say the finished design is my favorite of the ones I've done but considering I did the majority of this design on one Saturday I feel pretty good about it. I'm sure the performances will exceed my expectations as they always do and being a part of this group has really blessed my kids over the years so I'm glad to donate my time to S.K.I.T.

I've said this before on this very blog that trying to come up with an original design for an already established brand that I can't copy is really tough. I mean Disney did a great job when they marketed the movie version of this story and so everyone tends to think of their take on it. If I would of only been competing with the old book covers and such then it wouldn't of been as hard but everyone has seen what was done to promote the movie and tends to think of that whether consciously or unconsciously including myself. So, then my approach became to do something that is familiar enough that people get it right away without getting into copyright problems. Ultimately, I hope the end result is that people are attracted to the posters and shirts and want to come out to see the play. That alone would make me feel like I did my job and make me happy even if I don't absolutely love the design.

Zip Bam Pow

I have enjoyed designing t-shirts for Camp Tadmor for many years through my day job. They have always been great to work for as they are open to a wide variety of styles which means that it's always a fun new challenge each year.

This summer their camps will have a super hero theme and we were given the task of designing the shirts that are being given to every camper and camp staff. They gave us the basic idea of explosive pop art comic book type and I ran with it. I really like this style and I hope the kids and staff love it.

The navy colored shirts are for the campers and the red are for the staff.

I hung these on my back fence yesterday to take this picture. If any of my neighbors saw me they must of been really confused as to what I was doing.

Sweet Custom Type

Here is some custom type I did recently for a women's retreat at Lake Aurora Camp in Lake Wales, Florida. The speaker for the event is Pam Gillaspie and she uses a lot of chocolate imagery on her book covers and in her talks so the camp wanted to run with that theme. I tried to mimic the look of something you might see on a chocolate bar with my custom typography. I really like the look of hand lettered type and enjoy doing it even though I'm not great at it. With a little help from my Creative Director at work we pulled off a nice piece that I'm proud of.

New Custom Typography

I just completed a new typography piece that is being used by SKIT Theatre to promote their next shows. They will perform two short and unrelated plays each night and the evening is geared toward families with young children. When I heard the title I immediately thought of a sign for a theatre so I went to work. Little did I know how time consuming it would be to evenly place all the lights within the sign and make sure the pieces of the sign had a uniform thickness so that the lights would look right inside every piece. It was challenging but I think it was worth the extra effort.
